Jaisalmer is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, about 360 miles from the popular city of Jaipur which is the state capital of Rajasthan. Jaisalmer is a popular tourist location from tourists who come from across the world to visit this desert city as it lies in the heat of the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer is popular for its Fort and many Jain temples and many such temples are located inside the Fort. Jaisalmer Fort can be seen from all across the city and once inside the fort tourists will find lots to explore. The palace inside the fort area, numerous temples with unique architecture and walkways that lead like a maze around the fort where you will find all types of small shops and tradesmen selling artist goods that are perhaps their specialty. There are several tour agents and companies who organize desert camps and tours around Jaisalmer. Camping overnight is one of the major attractions amongst tourists from abroad. Watching the sunrise and sunset are popular in Jaisalmer. The best place to watch the sunset is from the top of the sand dunes, getting there involves a camel safari and many people gather at a set location where they mount camels to take them to the top to get a good view. It’s almost like a carnival type atmosphere on top. Sitting on top of mounds of sand in the desert and hundreds of people with cameras waiting to see the sunset.  During our visit to Jaisalmer we were able to stay in a desert camp that offered us an air conditioned tent with western style bathroom! These camps provided guided tours and live entertainment by the fire place at night. Something no tourist wants to miss when visiting Jaisalmer.

Tips for tourist visiting Jaisalmer

When making reservations online for a hotel don’t get mislead by advertisements that say they are located inside the Jaisalmer Fort. Many tourists think this is a good thing. Thousands of people live inside the Fort and there are small pathways and shops all over, the place is very congested and unless you are looking for bargain type hotels be careful. Desert camps can get very cold at night, if you are planning to spend the night outdoors in the desert, keep this in mind. Bedding is provided by the tour operators who organize such desert tours for sleep overs, but what they provide may not be up to your expectations. Tours purchased online will be two or three times more than what you can purchase them from within Jaisalmer. This also includes hotels. However, don’t arrive in Jaisalmer unless you have at least a one night reservation. Not worth taking a chance. Most silver and precious jewelry is fake. Stick with souvenirs and you will be fine, you can buy silver goods at a proper store. Riding a camel for a short duration may be fun for most people, however when it comes to riding a camel for a few hours trek, many people may not like it. Keep this in mind before paying for long desert trips. Camel carts are available in some places and these may suit those who don’t want to ride a camel by themselves. Camels can take two riders at a time usually. Many tourist attractions are in remote desert areas where sometimes you may end up to be the only one there with your tour guide with nothing around you but miles of sand. All said and done travel alone to remote desert areas should be avoided.
