Phone Sim Card to tourists visiting India

Question:  Thank for a fantastic and very informative site! For me as a (soon)  first time visitor in India your site has bee extremely valuable. I will go to India for two month in March and April. I want to buy train ticket in advance and online  (since i learned that trains often are fully booked). But when i try to registrate on www.irctc.co.in the will not allow me to do that without an Indian telephone number. Do you know how i can buy a simcard and activate it  from Sweden? Do you know any trustworthy site or company that i can buy from? I have both passport and a birth certificate in English that i can send to verify myselves. Or do you know any agency that i can contact to help med to buy traintickets for me? For example from Kovala to Goa. Hälsningar/Regards Jan Björkstrand Skellefteå Sweden Answer: Some time back I had a similar question from one of our website visitors, this question & answer is copied below and should help resolve your IRCTC website registration issue. Excerpt from http://www.travelindiasmart.com/train_tickets.php - How to buy train tickets without a mobile phone Dear T.I.S. I'm not sure that the information in your article "How to Buy train tickets without local mobile phone" is valid. I have tried numerous times to sign up/register on the IRCTC website and each time I've been unable to proceed because I don´t have a valid mobile phone number. I.e. an Indian mobile phone number. This is quite frustrating because it puts a halt on my travelling plans. Any suggestions on how to solve this rather annoying problem would be highly appreciated. Kindest regards/ Leif Renholm, Stockholm, Sweden  Travel India Smart If you are using your phone number make sure it’s 10 digits as Indian numbers are 10 digits. When registering, as soon as you select a foreign country in the address section you will see a message; ‘International users should contact care@irctc.co.in for verification of their account at IRCTC after online submission of registration forms at www.irctc.co.in along with their nationality documents such as passport etc. for due verification.’ The other alternative is to book you railway tickets through a travel agencies authorized to do so by the Indian Railways. Purchase India Sim Card from India

I am not aware of any facility where an Indian Sim Card of any of the Indian telephone service company providing mobile phone services can be purchased abroad. There are however some companies that do advertise international Sim cards on the Internet that they claim will also work in India if the user has an unlocked phone. Have never tried this type of service so I can’t say much whether their Sim would work in India or not, they do post rates such as 2$ per minute for incoming calls in India and $2.50 for outgoing calls. Way to  expensive and no guarantee this type of service would work. The only alternative is to buy a Sim on arrival in India and this should not be more that about two US$. There was a proposal by the Government of India to actually give a SIM card from the end of September 2016 to give foreign tourists arriving in India on e-tourist visa [e-TV].  BSNL one of India’s telephone provider companies was supposed to give Sim cards free of cost to such tourists at Kiosks setup at airport arrival terminals. However does not appear to have happened yet.
